Tāwharanui Regional Park is a Mainland Island, fenced off from the pest-ridden landscapes north of Auckland. Within reach from Auckland, this regenerating forest is abundand with native birds, some of which are flying in from the nearby bird sanctuary Little Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf. In spring, this little patch of native trees features rich Pohutukawa trees, attracting unusual numbers of Tui and bees. Multiple shades of green cover the steep cliff sides of the park. Throughout the Nikau stands in the valleys, as well as in the Manuka and Kanuka regrowth, many other rare birds, such as the Saddleback, can be heard and seen. Due to the Kauri Dieback Disease, gear-cleaning stations of the more maintained kind are present at some entry to the forest parts.
